Radio's under government control in Ecuador

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said his government will take over "many" radio and television stations, alleging their concessions were granted illegitimately.

In a radio interview late Monday, Correa said his administration will revert control of the stations to the state, following a report compiled by a government commission on the stations.

Correa, a self-avowed socialist who took office in January 2007 and was reelected under a new constitution in April, said the complete list of stations will be released in a week.

In his interview, Correa, a former finance minister, brushed off accusations that the measure is an attack on freedom of the press.
