Introducing Project STEPS

Our project partners in the Peruvian Amazon, crees, will be launching their new education project at the end of June.

Project STEPS

Project STEPS aims to tackle the issues of poverty, a lack of sustainable livelihoods and deforestation, by putting education at the heart of the agenda in the jungle town of Salvación. It will convert the local technical institute into a centre of excellence in Sustainable Land Management and Responsible Tourism, one that offers its students world-class ecological education.

The challenge
The Salvación Technical Institute is the only source of post-secondary education in the area. Yet its teaching staff are under-qualified and resources limited and out-of-date, resulting in poor education standards. Its graduates are unable to compete in the job market and are left with only two options: either pay for further training in Cuzco (impossible  for most), or seek menial and often environmentally destructive work nearby.

The aim
crees plan to help Salvación develop economically and sustainably, by giving the local community the career options and knowledge to be able to enjoy their environment and work towards protecting it. The project will transform the Institute through five years of teacher training and curriculum development.

As well as equipping its students with the knowledge and qualifications necessary to choose sustainable livelihoods, it is also hoped that the Institute will produce environmental ambassadors. Ambassadors who will campaign to get sustainability and the preservation of their country's biodiversity at the heart of the political discourse, at a local and national level.
