Ethical Volunteering

International volunteering expert Dr Kate Simpson has recently launched ‘The Ethical Volunteering Guide’ and is following this with a web-site dedicated to Ethical Volunteering. Following several years of research into international volunteering, gap years and their effects on participants and host communities, Dr Simpson is keen to provide impartial information to all potential volunteers.
In the constant push to raise standards in the industry and raise public awareness several organisations have wholeheartedly support the guide and Dr Simpson’s attempts to help volunteers find ethical and worthwhile volunteer opportunities worldwide. Check out the new web-site at http://www.ethicalvolunteering.org/ where a copy of the guide can be downloaded.

To see an example of what an ethical organisation does to answer the questions from the guide click here http://www.questoverseas.com/responsible_travel/the_ethical_volunteering_guide_answers.html

Shouldn't all organisations be doing this as a minimum? Why the lack of transparency?

Great website! Unfortunately, talking to volunteer tourists during my research I found that many of them had chosen sending organisations based purely on factors such as the cost and location of their programmes. So I think this website is exactly what we need to encourage volunteers to pick ethical organisations. If volunteers start asking these kind of questions, this should also put pressure on some sending organisations to reconsider their principles and practices.
